This field of dentistry has undergone one the most spectacular improvements in recent years. Orthodontic appliances, materials are much more aesthetic, comfortable and less problematic today then they used to be 10 years ago.
Nevertheless the wast of methods makes the average patient uncertain what to choose. There are plenty (Damon, Incognito) which we do not recommend or only after thorough consideration.
Metal brackets
are the most common and well-known type among young people because they use colored rubber bands that attach the archwire to the brackets, which can be changed at every appointment. They are made of a stainless steel alloy.
Ceramic brackets
are the ideal choice for patients for whom aesthetics are paramount. The archwire can be attached to the brackets using transparent rubber bands. Friction between the ceramic brackets and the metal archwire is less than ideal, which can sometimes make tooth movement more difficult.
